"Sometimes when the lightning strikes it sits there and smolders," said Romulus Fire Chief David Allison.
The building, which is currently being used as a preschool for about 300 children, will be closed until Monday because of the smoke and water damage in the gym.
No one was hurt.
Statement from school:
"The fire was contained to a portion of the roof over the gym. There was minimal damage. The initial cause seems to be a lightning strike. School will be closed Thursday and Friday to give crews time to make final assessments and for any clean up needed."
