PONTIAC, Mich. – A second civilian has died from injuries suffered in a Nov. 1 traffic accident involving an Oakland County Sheriff's deputy.
The victim is 24-year-old James Greer. His 25-year-old friend, Joseph Lawton-Hooks, who was the driver, died Nov. 5.
His mother Angela Lawton is frustrated with the pace of the Sheriff's investigation.
"They're not telling me anything," she said. "I don't have his wallet. I don't have a cellphone. I don't have a police report."
Lawton-Hooks was driving Greer home when the deputy's car hit them at the intersection of Cesar Chavez and Johnson in Pontiac. The Sheriff's Office says the deputy's emergency equipment had been activated. He was driving to help other deputies in an unrelated pursuit.
Angela Lawton's attorney, Ven Johnson, says even if officers activate their lights and sirens, they are required to use caution when going through stop signs or red lights.
The deputy was treated and released after the crash. He is off duty because of his injuries, not because of a suspension.
A spokesman for the Sheriff's Office says the length of the investigation is not unusual. It may not be completed for several weeks.
The results will automatically be forwarded to the Oakland County prosecutor.
