DETROIT – The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department's moratorium on shutoffs ended Monday.
The shutoffs will resume on Tuesday.
Before the moratorium, the water department had been shutting off service to residential customers who had failed to pay their bill. Darryl Latimer, the deputy director of the water department, said the moratorium was put in place to give the department time to deal with the bad publicity created by the delinquency crackdown.
The department originally suspended shutoffs for 15 days starting on July 21. On Aug. 4, the shutoffs moratorium was extended another 15 business days.
Shutoffs to delinquent commercial customers never ended.
Detroit held a water fair in the Cobo Center on Saturday morning to help delinquent water customers.

The water department said those who didn't show up Monday to customer care locations will get a voucher.
"Please be advised that, just like at Saturday's Water Fair at Cobo, those who are not seen today at one of our three customer care locations will be given a voucher that gives them the opportunity to visit one of our locations between now and Thursday, August 28 and get serviced under the same conditions as they would have today," wrote water department Greg Eno in an email to Local 4.
Eno added if people show up after 4 p.m. Monday and feel they are in imminent danger of being shut off, they should call 313-267-8000 first thing in the morning
"Or better yet, come down to one of our locations," he said.

All DWSD Customer Service Centers are now open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (extended from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.) and all centers have new Saturday hours from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The DWSD Customer Care Call Center is now open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays (extended from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.) and also has added the same Saturday hours as the walk-in centers of 8 a.m.-3 p.m.
