STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – Nathan Heinz, of Richmond, is charged with the death of 44-year-old Charles Weber, of Shelby Township.
Police say Heinz was drunk and never tried to stop his GMC Yukon when it smashed right over Weber's Harley Davidson which was stopped at a light on Mound Road before Dobry Drive on Sunday night in Sterling Heights.
"We heard a big bang here in the front. We ran out here to see the motorcycle, to see if the person was alright. And he was nowhere to be found," said Guilio Russo.
Russo owns Screamers Ice Cream next to the scene of the crash. He is one of a handful of people who rushed to help when it happened about 10 p.m. He soon realized the man on the motorcycle was being dragged under the SUV.
"We saw the body underneath the truck and I ran down the street screaming (at the SUV) to stop. He wouldn't stop. He stopped three times, briefly, and then the third time that gentleman kind of folded up underneath the truck, and he ran him over," said Russo.
Sterling Heights police Lt. David Smith described it as a tragedy for both men and their families.
"Of course, the victim, your heart goes out to him and his family, but also the suspect in this case -- a young man who had a lot of life in front of him and he made a bad decision," said Smith.
Police say Heinz returned to the crash scene after a few minutes and turned himself in.
"Tough scenes like this the message is think about what you're doing out there because when you're making a bad decision, it has life consequences. There's no going back once the decision is made," said Smith.
Heinz was released to his parents on 10 percent of a $25,000 bond. He will wear an alcohol tether and is allowed to drive to and from work only.
He is scheduled to be back in court Aug. 10.
