DETROIT – Allegations involving state representative Alberta Tinsley-Talabi emerged in a sentencing memo submitted Wednesday by U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade for George Stanton.
Stanton used to be Tinsley-Talabi's former Chief of Staff when she was a Detroit city councilwoman. He's been charged with accepting more than $100,000 in bribes in exchange for political favors.
Stanton will be sentenced Thursday in Detroit's Federal Court.
According to the sentencing memo for Stanton, prosecutors say Tinsley-Talabi told Stanton to tell a potential investor that if he wanted his proposal approved by the pension board of trustees, he needed to donate $3,000 to her political campaign.
The feds say she also directed Stanton to tell the investor to also give $5,000 to former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's civic fund and another $5,000 to the police union.
"As her Chief of Staff, Stanton advised Tinsley-Talabi on matters arising before the PFRS board of trustees," the memorandum says. "In 2006, while Chief of Staff, Stanton agreed to accept over $100,000 from Anmar Sarafa, an owner of Steward Capital Management and Munros Capital. Sarafa agreed to pay this money to Stanton in order to buy favorable influence and assistance from Stanton over Sarafa's $20 million Steward Capital investment proposal then pending before the PFRS board."
Tinsley-Talabi served on city council from 1993-2009 and was a trustee on the Detroit Police and Fire Retirement System.
She was elected to the state house in 2010.
Tinsley-Talabi has not been charged with any criminal wrongdoing. It's not yet clear if she is -- or will be under investigation by the Federal Government.
