Her father, Doug Smith, spent months trying to remove the fraudulent accounts established in his daughter’s name. He filed a police report and filled out an affidavit.
DTE said it could take up to two months to investigate.
The identity theft was flagged by a credit monitoring service the family used after their medical records were breached last year.
DTE Energy released the following statement:
"DTE Energy takes the confidentiality of customer information extremely seriously and works daily to ensure all customer information is secure. Anytime we receive information like this, we work with the appropriate law enforcement organizations to ensure prosecution at the fullest extent of the law. While this specific case is still an open investigation, DTE flagged this account upon learning about the situation and will work with this customer through the holiday weekend to resolve the situation with the Smith family and ensure the integrity of their personal information."
