STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – A preliminary exam is scheduled Monday for a 22-year-old Sterling Heights man who is charged with hitting and killing a 47-year-old woman who was pushing her disabled son in a wheelchair.

Linda Khayya and her 15-year-old son were walking near the corner of 14 Mile and Ryan roads on Aug. 31, 2015, when a red Cadillac hit them and fled the scene, police said.

Khayya died from her injuries. Her son had to be hospitalized for injuries.

Police found the Cadillac a short time after the accident in Highland Park, and the suspect was identified as Xhuljan Gjinaj.

He is charged with operating while intoxicated causing death, operating while intoxicated causing serious injury, driving on a suspended license and leaving the scene of an injury accident.

A judge is expected to decide Monday if there's enough evidence to send him to trial.
