Shootout down Cherry Hill Road ends with car hitting house in Inkster

1 driver shot, killed; 1 person in custody

INKSTER, Mich. – A gun battle Thursday afternoon in Inkster led to a car hitting a house along Cherry Hill Road between Merriman and Middlebelt roads.

Police said people in two separate vehicles were exchanging gunfire while traveling on Cherry Hill Road, which forms a border between Garden City and Inkster. One of the drivers was shot. That car jumped the curb and hit a house.

The driver was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Witnesses told Local 4 they saw emergency personnel performing CPR on him.

Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw said no one in the house was injured when the car struck. He also said one person is in custody and a firearm has been recovered by police.

"The house was occupied at the time, but nobody was injured in the home," said Shaw. "The driver was transported to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead at the scene. Officers were able to make contact with the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody. He's currently at the Inkster Police Department talking to (State Police) detectives. We've also recovered the firearm we believe was used in the crime. There is no danger to the public."

People nearby could hear the gunshots from inside their homes.

"We heard it come off our house, and it must have been like 10 shots," said Sabrina Listopad. "It sounded like it hit our house, but we don't know."

Started as fight in apartment complex

Police said it's possible this all started as a fight inside an apartment complex down the road from where the crash happened. That's where the shots first were fired. One man hopped into a car and started speeding down Cherry Hill Road to get away. Ultimately, he crashed into the house.
