LIVONIA, Mich. – A 23-year-old man who was pulled over on suspicion of drunk driving is in the hospital after police said they were forced to fire at him early Sunday morning.
According to the Livonia Police Department, a witness called dispatchers to report a driver of a Ford Explorer driving erratically, swerving in and out of traffic at about 2 a.m.
Police said an officer located the driver in the area of Interstate 96 near Farmington Road and confirmed the man was driving erratically, suspecting he may be intoxicated.
After the officer pulled the man over, a second officer arrived at the stop as backup. As the officers walked up to the man's vehicle he pointed what the officer's described as a long gun out the window at them.
Police said the officers responded by firing at the driver and the man pulled the gun back inside the car.
According to police, after several verbal commands to get out of the vehicle without the gun, the man exited his Explorer and was arrested.
Arika Trachsel said the arrest was made just outside her home while her husband was away. She said she feared the worst for her family, with her two children -- ages 1 and 4 -- inside the home.
"The next thing I know all these cops are out there guns drawn and I stayed away from the window at that point," Traschel. "I was just shaking and freaking out."
Police said the man suffered an apparent gunshot wound and was taken to an area hospital.
No officers were injured in the shooting.
The man, identified as a Livonia resident, did not receive life-threatening injuries and is in stable condition. He is expected to be arraigned early next week.
