Jury deliberates for man accused of shooting federal judge outside Detroit home

DETROIT – Jury deliberations have begun in the trial for a man who is accused of shooting and wounding a federal judge outside a home in Detroit's University District.

UPDATE: Court is adjourned until Tuesday.

Kevin Smith, 23, is charged with shooting Judge Terrence Berg outside Berg's home on Oak Drive in March 2015.

Berg testified that Smith asked to be let into the home, but when he refused to let Smith and another man in, Smith shot him in the right leg.

Berg recovered from the gunshot wound.

Smith is charged with armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, assault with intent to murder, using a firearm to commit a felony and being a felon in possession of a gun.

The other man is acting as a cooperating witness and has not been identified by the prosecutor's office. Smith is also charged in a string of separate robberies. 

Berg lives in Detroit but works at the federal courthouse in Flint.
