Former Walled Lake PTA treasurer charged with embezzlement

If convicted, Tynita Nicole Werts-Baker could face up to 10 years in prison

WALLED LAKE, Mich. – A former Pleasant Lake PTA treasurer is facing embezzlement charges after allegedly taking thousands of dollars.

An investigation into Tynita Nicole Werts-Baker started after $6,100 in questionable charges were discovered, West Bloomfield police said.

From Sept. 1, 2014, through April 26, 2016, Werts-Baker allegedly made unauthorized transactions through the Pleasant Lake Elementary PTA checking account by using a debit card under her name.

She resigned on April 26, just days before an internal investigation was conducted into the school's PTA funds by police.

PTA President Sharyn Gallatin wrote a letter to Pleasant Lake families assuring them that the school's PTA funds remain separate from the funds of Pleasant Lake Elementary and the Walled Lake Consolidated Schools's District.

"We're working with our administration and with the district to ensure that all events that were scheduled to go on for the kids and families of Pleasant Lake continue to do so," Gallatin said.

The PTA is also reviewing its financial practices to prevent future incidents by making sure at least two people sign all checks in the future and to get accurate financial accounting each month.

Werts-Baker is charged with embezzlement of $1,000 to $20,000 from a non-profit or charitable organization. She is being held on a $15,000 bond for the 10 year felony.
