Sky lantern to blame for catching several houses on fire in Highland Park

HIGHLAND PARK, MI – Fire investigators in Highland Park are investigating whether a sky lantern is to blame for starting a fire that spread to four houses early Tuesday morning. 

The fire started at about 4 a.m. on Farrand Park. 

Firefighters were hindered in their efforts to put out the fire by insufficient water pressure in a hydrant. They had to switch to other hydrants. 

Until proper water pressure was obtained to operate the fire hoses, fire crews were forced to withdraw from the homes, as the flames continued to grow.

Within an hour, the fire had engulfed one home completely, charring all three floors of the home.

Several people were able to escape the fires in the homes.
