Family grieves for man hit by car, killed in East Detroit

DETROIT – An East Detroit family is grieving Tuesday night and begging the person who ran over their loved one to come forward. The 51-year-old man was hit as he and his cousin were riding bicycles early Saturday.

Kenneth McKnight had adopted a new hobby of riding bicycles. He bought tall handle bars for it, put mirrors on it and even covered it in lights from top to bottom, which makes it harder to understand how someone didn't see him.

McKnight's mother and cousin's emotions are still very raw as they try to understand why someone would hit him and not pull over.

"How anybody could run over a human being and think it's OK not to even stop to see if you could do anything for them?" asked Lucinda Mazone, McKnight's mother.

McKnight leaves a big family behind. He was a father of seven.

McKnight, who had just bought a new bicycle, and his cousin were riding over a bridge on Detroit's east side at Mound and Mount Elliot roads when a driver came out of nowhere.

"I dive out of the way. The next thing I know, the car goes from this lane to that lane and then straightens up and it just kept (going) straight," his cousin, Brian Hansborough, said.

A nurse stopped and helped by giving CPR, but McKnight died at the hospital.

"What will I miss the most about him? I see him every day or every other day and it's like my brother (is) gone," Hansborough said.

"Please take responsibility for what happened," Mazone said. "I'm not mad at them. I feel sorry for them. I'm going to pray for them."
