DETROIT – Shinola and Dan Gilbert's Bedrock Real Estate Services LLC are teaming up to develop an independent boutique hotel in Downtown Detroit.
Shinola will turn the red, eight-story building at 1400 Woodward Avenue, where there used to be a hardware store and, most recently, Easter Wig and Hair Company, into a hotel with 130 rooms.

The four-story building two doors down at 1416 Woodward Avenue is also part of the project.
Renovations on the building are set to begin in November. The hotel is expected to open in fall of 2018.
"(Bedrock is) a creative real estate firm that focuses on delivering unique developments," said Dan Mullen, executive vice president at Bedrock. "Shinola is this amazing craftsmanship brand. Utilizing both of our expertise to build a hotel is what is so attractive about this."
New York-based NoHo Hospitality Group will be in charge of the food and beverage elements of the hotel.
Bedrock acquired the eight-story, 62,000-square-foot retail/office building in December 2013 for $2.7 million.
Early plans call for mixed use on the hotel's first floor, with retail, restaurant and a living room area.
Hotel rooms will occupy the second through eighth floors, and meeting space will also be part of the plan, Shinola President Jacques Panis said.
"Behind (the hotel) we're going to activate the alley space," with retail and food and beverage options, Mullen said. "Obviously, we love alleys."
In 2014, Bedrock and Library Street Collective opened The Belt, an art-filled alley between the two wings of The Z parking garage in downtown Detroit.
"We want to energize the alley and activate it so you're not only getting great experience from the front, but also the back of the property," Mullen said.
