DETROIT – Two Detroit parents have been charged in the death of their 11-month-old son, who was dropped off at a hospital Thursday morning with no vital signs.
Lorenzo Brooks, 30, and Leticia Molton, 38, were arrested Friday and charged with involuntary manslaughter and second-degree child abuse.
Molton said she woke up Thursday and could the infant unresponsive. Brooks took the infant to the hospital.
The parents are expected to be arraigned Saturday after 11 a.m.
"There are babies in this county dying that should not be dying," Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy said. "Unsafe sleep practices can be just as fatal to a baby as a gun or knife. The alleged actions of both parents in this case are criminal – they knew their alleged actions could result in the death of their child."
The father claimed he had fallen asleep on top of the boy.
Police are gathering evidence into what led to the child’s death adding that the same couple had a 6-month-old daughter who died in 2014. Her death was attributed to sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS, a Detroit police official told Local 4.
