Detroit police chief: Officers shot at by someone with assault-type rifle

Chief: No injuries, no one in custody

DETROIT – Detroit Police Chief James Craig said two officers came under gunfire Wednesday morning in a neighborhood near 8 Mile and John R in Detroit.

There are no reports of injuries.

Witnesses reported seeing someone with a long gun fire shots at officers about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Authorities had set up a perimeter around Derby and Remington near the State Fair grounds.

Craig said the officers were ambushed by someone who fired 8 to 10 rounds with an assault-type rifle.

"Officers on routine patrol, not responding to a call for service, were in this area. They were eastbound on Remington at Derby. As they approached the intersection they heard several shots being fired. As they continued to advance in the eastbound direction, they looked and saw a suspect with what appeared to be an assault-type rifle, a magazine -- a large capacity magazine -- and began to fire shots at the officers," said Craig.

The chief said the officers quickly drove out of the way of the fire. They were not injured.

Watch the chief's comments:

Craig said they are looking for three suspects. No suspects are in custody. The suspect armed with the weapon was wearing all black.

"It appeared that he may have had a white T-shirt under a black jacket," said Craig.

Police are working on enhancing an image of a suspect before it is released to the public.

"We do know there is a drug house on this block and there has been a rift between two opposing drug gangs," said Craig.

The suspect is believed to be in the area, said the chief.
