Retired Detroit police officer shot during attempted carjacking

Masked man tries to carjack retired Detroit officer on side of road

DETROIT – A retired Detroit police officer was shot Tuesday during an attempted carjacking on the city's west side, according to officials.

The retired officer pulled over on the side of the road near Plymouth Road and Forrer Street around 7:30 p.m. to text his wife when a man approached him. There was a struggle, and the retired officer was shot in the hip, police said.

The retired officer sustained a non-life-threatening injury, officials said.

The attempted carjacker fled the scene. He was wearing a white hoodie and a black mask, police said.

The retired officer was taken to the hospital for treatment. He is expected to be OK.

Police are continuing to search for the attempted carjacker.
