ROMULUS, Mich. – Police are looking for a gunman who opened fire on a group of teens in a car and injured a 13-year-old boy in Romulus.
"It's not something you expect every day," the 17-year-old driver said.
He said he was just getting a pizza with his family members -- ages 13, 14 and 15 -- when a man in a car leaving the Burger King on Wayne Road opened fire.
"As he makes it onto I-94, he gets on the exit, he starts shooting," the teen said. "Two in the back of the car."
One of the bullets went through the back seat cushion and bruised his 13-year-old cousin, who was sitting in the back seat of the car.
"The first shot I felt something hit me like a spike," the 13-year-old said. "It hurt real bad."
He said his cousins and brother weren't sure what to make of the incident, and his 17-year-old cousin had to take the lead.
"After he heard me say, 'Ow,' he checked on me and we just knew that some guy had shot us," the 13-year-old said. "But we hurried up and turned back, but we were also still afraid."
They said they weren't sure if the shooter was still behind them.
"Then I zipped home after that," the driver said. "Make sure everybody's safe."
It was a harrowing experience for the young group of teens.
"He was sitting right there," the 13-year-old said. "He saw both my older brother and my cousin. He could have shot them right there."
