According to KSNV, 25-year-old Miguel Salas was killed in the shootout.

Investigators said Officer Nelson returned fire ten times. One of those shots hit Salas in the head.

Officer Nelson was hit once in the chest. The bullet went right between his vest cover, but did not hit any vital organs.

After the shooting, SWAT officers arrived and found Salas deceased from a single gunshot wound to the head. Police say initial reports ruled Salas's death a suicide, but forensic evidence determined he was killed by a bullet from Officer Nelson's weapon.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said Salas was driving a stolen truck and had stolen cell phones. Police said Salas also had two guns in the truck. Because of his criminal history, Salas should not have been in possession of firearms.

Officer Nelson was treated for his wound and was placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Police said Neslon's partner was hit in the holster but was not injured.
