Man kills woman, himself during break-in at his ex-girlfriend's home on Detroit's west side

Ex-girlfriend in hospital after being shot 3 times

DETROIT – Police said there were three young children at a home on Detroit's west side when a man broke in and killed a woman before killing himself.

The break-in happened Monday morning and led to a barricaded situation near Wreford and Linwood streets.

The SWAT team swarmed the home around 7:15 a.m. Monday. Several roads in the area were blocked off.

Police said a man went to his ex-girlfriend's home and shot her three times. The man kicked in the door to the home.

"As soon as he made entry into this location, he began firing multiple shots," Detroit Police Chief James Craig said.

The man and woman have a child together. The woman was able to escape the home with the child. She is being treated at a hospital. Her condition is not known at this time. Her child was not injured.

Another woman also was in the home. Police said the man shot and killed her before shooting and killing himself. Craig said the woman, identified as Sherrol White, was a friend of the man's ex-girlfriend.

"She was staying here as an act of a personal protection order because of the continued violence between her and the suspect," Craig said.

Another child was in the home at the time of the shooting. Craig said the child is just 8 or 9 days old and was suffering from hypothermia.

"Other than the hypothermia, she was not injured," Craig said.

The shooting prompted a barricade situation at the home Monday morning. The chief said a special response team entered the home and found the man and woman dead.
