DETROIT – Wayne State University has reopened after a gas main break forced evacuations Friday afternoon.

A construction crew working on the roadway at 2nd Street and Warren Avenue hit an underground gas main.

Classes were canceled.

The Detroit Fire Department requested an evacuation radius of 1,000 feet.

All housing buildings on main campus were evacuated. The evacuation location for campus residents is Matthaei. University Towers will remain open.

  • Engineering

  • Hilberry Theatre
  • McKenzie House
  • Old Main
  • Physics Building

  • State Hall
  • WSU Bookstore

An email was sent out to Wayne State University students, staff and faculty Friday afternoon, alerting and urging them to avoid the area.

Warren Avenue was closed between Cass Avenue and Anthony Wayne Drive. 

There has been no injuries.
