St. Clair Shores police in standoff with barricaded gunman, 2 injuries reported

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. – A 60-year-old man is in a standoff with St. Clair Shores police after officials said he shot two people Thursday night before locking himself inside a home near 13 Mile Road and Saint Margaret Street.

A 10-year-old Detroit girl and a 62-year-old St. Clair Shores woman were shot Thursday night, according to police. They were transported to a hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials said the man became upset around 10 p.m. because his neighbors were lighting off fireworks for the Fourth of July.

The scene was still very active Friday. Police said they tried to contact the man several times and made attempts to get inside the home. Officials still have the area blocked off and are asking residents to remain inside their homes.

Police said they are using multiple tactics to get him out of the house peacefully. They said they have called him multiple times but he just hangs up. Police have not confirmed if the suspect is inside the home by himself.

In a press release, officials said the suspect has continued to fire shots at police throughout the negotiation process.

The man went outside and got into an argument with his neighbor because he didn't like the noise and wanted them to leave, according to authorities. He went back to his home, came out with a laser affixed to a rifle, went back in to get another rifle and then started firing shots, officials said.

"He came back out with the laser beam again," his neighbor said. "He's aiming it. No one paid him any attention. At this point, he walks directly across the street, he puts his arm up and just starts firing at the kids. Then he starts firing when we were running, scattering, getting the kids in the house. Then, he opens fire again, started aiming at anyone who didn't make it in the house."

"On 07/04/2019 at approximately 10:05 p.m., St. Clair Shores Police Officers were dispatched to the 31900 block of St. Margaret St. for a neighbor trouble dispute.  As officers were responding to the scene, additional information was obtained that a W/M suspect had shot two (2) subjects, later identified as a sixty-two (62) year old female resident of St. Clair Shores and a ten (10) year old female  resident of Detroit.  As officers arrived on the scene, the suspect fled into an area home and continued firing shots at both officers and civilians. Both wounded victims were evacuated from the area and transported to an area hospital where they were both treated for non-life threatening injuries.  St. Clair Shores officers quickly identified and surrounded the home where the suspect was at and immediately attempted to negotiate his surrender.  Although brief contact was made with the suspect, he refused to exit the residence.  On multiple occasions throughout the negotiation process, the suspect continued to fire shots at police.  It has yet to be confirmed if the suspect was inside the residence by himself. This incident is still on-going and it is our hope to resolve it peacefully.  We have received a tremendous amount of assistance from the Michigan State Police, Macomb County Sheriff’s Department, Eastpointe Police Department, Roseville Police Department and the Sterling Heights Police Department. There is no additional information at this time, however, updates will be provided as soon as possible."
