Artists prepare for Arts, Beats and Eats by painting Royal Oak parking meters

Festival is Sept. 1-4

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Artists were painting parking meters Saturday in Royal Oak in preparation for next weekend's Arts, Beats and Eats festival.

Artists painted about 70 meters last year and 40 more will be painted today, Stephanie McIntyre said.

"Making something as drab as a parking meter more colorful and bright, it makes people look around. It brings more life to the city," artist Kyle Rise Irving said.

Irving was busy painting a meter near HopCat.

Two other artists, Alyssa Klash and Alan Ledford, were creating a werewolf meter. Last year, they took first place in the decorating contest with an alien-like meter.
