Detroit Public Schools looks to fill 258 teacher vacancies

DETROIT – Detroit Public Schools Community District has a staggering number of teacher vacancies just days prior to the first day of school and held a job fair to recruit educators.

According to the district, the district has 258 vacancies and has 57 teachers who are pending clearance. Last year, the district started the school year with 276 vacancies.

The district said substitutes will cover the vacancies on the first day.

“One vacancy is too many, but over the next year we will improve teacher pay, improve morale, and develop a long-term plan to improve the status of teacher vacancies in the district,” senior executive director of communications and marketing Chrystal Wilson said.

The district says hundreds of teachers were hired since the new administration started.

"Our teachers, our parents and our students deserve a full-time teacher in every classroom," DPSCD superintendent Nikolai Vitti said.

A job fair was held Thursday at Ben Carson High School.
