City of Detroit adding 9 businesses, much more to revitalize East Warren business district

New city staffer overseeing development of micro corridors

DETROIT – The long-neglected East Warren business district in Detroit is getting some major upgrades, including nine new walkable businesses.

East Warren is one of several areas under the oversight of Amanda Elias, a new city staff member appointed by the Detroit mayor’s office.

“We’re super excited,” Elias said. “We’re seeing lots of new development investments.”

East Warren Avenue is littered with buildings that have seen better days. But between 3 Mile Drive and Cadieux Road, there are signs of positive change.

Construction is underway, old buildings are being restored, and new streetscapes are coming in. The streetscapes are expected to be completed by next month.

“This is what it takes to spark a commercial corridor,” Elias said. “The streetscape is the city’s investment to help bring back life to the corridor.”

Elias is helping businesses and developers navigate the revitalization process as part of the city’s strategic neighborhood fund.

“I’m really excited,” developer Edward Carrington said. “This transformation means a lot to the community.”

Among the plans for the micro corridor: More parking, landscaping, bike lanes, and nine new walkable businesses, including restaurants, modern apartments, a book store, a coffee shop, a cafe, and a bakery.

“This is something our neighbors really have been hungry for,” said Joe Rashid, of the East Warren Development Corporation.

East Warren is one of 11 micro corridors in Detroit receiving investment and development right now.
