A Washington Township man was charged with allegedly handcuffing his girlfriend without her consent and assaulting her in their Washington Township apartment.

The alleged assault occurred on Wednesday (Jan. 3).

Officials say, Dewitt Bunting, 31, was charged with unlawful imprisonment (15-year felony), assault with a dangerous weapon (four-year felony), possession of cocaine less than 25 grams (four-year felony), resisting and obstructing a police officer (two-year felony), felony firearm (two-year mandatory felony), and domestic violence second offense (one-year misdemeanor).

Bunting was arraigned in 42-1 Romeo District Court and received a $500,000 cash/surety bond.

If the 31-year-old makes bond, officials say he is to have no contact with the victim or apartment complex, and he must wear a GPS tether and have drug and alcohol testing.

A mental health evaluation was requested, but the judge presiding over the case declined to order one at this time.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for Tuesday (Jan. 16) at 10 a.m. and a preliminary exam is scheduled for Tuesday (Jan. 21) at 9 a.m.
