Barry Washington is charged with 2 counts of assault

DETROIT – Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Barry Holley Washington, 45, in connection with the non-fatal shooting of a Detroit police officer.

The incident occurred on Thursday (Jan. 11) at 11:15 p.m. when officers were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 12900 block of Burt Street in Detroit for a shooting.

Upon their arrival, officers located Washington on the second floor of the apartment building.

During the officers’ encounter with the Detroit native, it is alleged that the 45-year-old produced and fired a shotgun at the officers.

Gunfire was exchanged between officers and Washington, and one officer was struck in the arm.

Medics arrived on the scene and transported the injured officer to a Metro Detroit hospital for treatment. He has since been released from the hospital.

Washington, on the other hand, did not sustain gunshot wounds.

The 45-year-old man has been charged with two counts of assault with intent to murder, one count of discharge of a firearm in a building, and three counts of felony firearm.

He was charged on Sunday (Jan. 14) in 36th District Court and given a $100,000 cash bond with a GPS tether and house arrest.

A bond re-determination hearing is scheduled for Wednesday (Jan. 17) at 9 a.m.

The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for Monday (Jan. 22) at 8:30 a.m.
