20 people rescued from ice floe in Lake Erie

Ice fishers were stranded roughly a mile from shore

PORT CLINTON, Ohio – After being stranded Monday, Jan, 22, on an ice flow in Lake Erie, 20 people are now safely on dry ground.

According to the United States Coast Guard, they were stranded on an ice floe about a mile offshore from Catawaba Island State Park, near Sandusky, Ohio.

The Great Lakes Coast Guard worked with the Coast Guard Air Station Detroit and other municipal authorities on rescue operations. Authorities said airboats rescued nine people off the ice, four were rescued by local authorities and seven people could get to land themselves.
