Michigan State Police troopers shoot, kill man in tree stand

Shooting happened roughly 10 miles southeast of Traverse City

FIFE LAKE, Mich. – A 35-year-old man from the Traverse Bay Area was killed by police following a domestic assault Sunday, Jan. 28.

According to authorities, deputies with the Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office were sent to a residence in Fife Lake on reports of a domestic assault Saturday, Jan. 27, but the man had fled the scene before they arrived. Police said the man was seen on a neighboring property’s trail camera about a mile away the next day. The neighbor, who does not live in the area, had asked another neighbor to check on the security of his trailer. The responding neighbor drove to the trailer, where he was reportedly greeted by the man, who exited the trailer and fired a gun into the air. Police were contacted.

Shortly after, a conservation officer from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and a sheriff’s deputy saw the man fleeing into the woods. When the two followed after the man, they reportedly heard gunfire and took cover. Michigan State Police troopers tracked the man with a K-9 and a drone to an enclosed tree stand. Authorities said there was a confrontation with the man that resulted in troopers fatally shooting the man. A loaded gun was recovered from the tree stand.

Further details were not revealed at the time.
