‘Rock snot’ nuisance algae discovered in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula

KALKASKA COUNTY, MI — State biologists are sounding the alarm over the detection of a nuisance algae nicknamed “rock snot” in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula after a tribal biologist discovered a large bloom in the Upper Manistee River. The discovery is unwelcome for one of Michigan’s premier trout fisheries and its presence in the Manistee River suggests didymo may be waiting to be found elsewhere in the state. Didymo earned the nickname “rock snot” because of its mucus-like appearance and preference for clinging to gravel river bottoms. Didymo was first discovered in Michigan in 2015, when large mats were found blanketing the St. Marys River near Sault Ste. Anyone who suspects they have found an invasive or nuisance species is encouraged to take photos, record its location and report it to the Midwest Invasive Species Information Network.
