Belle Isle beach closed due to high bacteria levels

DETROIT – The Belle Isle Beach was closed Monday, July 15, due to high bacteria levels in the water.
According to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, recent testing done by the Detroit Health Department has found high values of E. coli in the water .

E. coli bacteria are found in the digestive systems of warm-blooded animals, including humans. Elevated E. coli levels are possible after a storm or strong winds because bacteria are carried in stormwater runoff and stirred up by waves.

City officials said the beach will reopen once bacterial levels return to an acceptable level.
