An Oakland County doctor has pled guilty to eight felony counts in connection with a $400,000 fraudulent disability insurance claim.

According to authorities, Dr. Rainna Furnari Brazil applied for and received disability insurance payments from the Unum Life Insurance Company of America while working as a licensed osteopathic physician. Investigators found that Brazil received more than $400,000 in disability insurance payments from 2017 through 2021.

Brazil reportedly lied to the insurance company and denied she had been working as a physician.

Brazil pleaded guilty Monday, Oct. 8, to three counts of false pretenses – $100,000 or more, two counts of false pretenses ― $20,000 or more but less than $50,000, two counts of failure to file taxes and one count of insurance fraud.

As a condition of the plea agreement, Brazil agreed to pay a total of $458,962 in restitution.

If Brazil pays an additional $100,000 toward restitution during the 11-month delayed sentence, she will face reduced charges and a maximum of one year in jail. Full restitution payment could further reduce the charges to false pretenses alone, with a sentencing range of 0 to 17 months. However, failure to pay at least $100,000 will result in sentencing on all charges.
