A Metro Detroit nonprofit that provides food, clothing, and other assistance is asking for the public’s help as colder weather continues to hit the area.
Bernadette’s Faith In Action is urging the public to consider donating men’s winter coats to its clothing pantry.
Demand for warm winter coats and accessories is increasing.
In the parking lot of Life of Purpose Christian Church on E. 10 Mile Road, you’ll see a couple of sheds the nonprofit uses as food and clothing pantries.
“This is our 24-hour pantry,” said volunteer Barry Brockert as he replenished items. “As you can see, this time a year, we keep it stocked with warmer clothes. We’ve got sweatshirts and boots and shoes.”
Brockert and other volunteers said the cold snap across the area has the team struggling to keep up with some of the demand for items to help keep people warm.
Volunteers described the need for men’s winter coat donations as critical.
According to the volunteers, the limited supply of coats currently on the racks inside the pantry and in the sorting closet may only last one week.
The group said it could use donations of new, gently used, and clean men’s coats in all sizes.
“That is the biggest thing we go through every year,” Brockert said. “Winter coats, especially men’s, and blankets.” They’re hard to come by.”
The volunteers said boots, hats, scarves, gloves, and other warm winter gear would also help.
Pastor Matt Trombley said those donations could help meet some immediate needs.
“This time of the year, we’re trying to connect with families, talk with them a little bit more, and provide for them even beyond what’s in the shed,” Trombley said.
With winter upon us, volunteers with Bernadette’s Faith In Action and members of Life of Purpose Christian Church are relying on generous neighbors.
“We’d really appreciate some help,” Brockert said.
Anyone interested in helping the organization with donations of men’s coats could drop them off on Saturdays between Noon and 2 p.m. at Life of Purpose Christian Church located at 20880 E 10 Mile Road, St. Claire Shores, MI 48080.
