How volunteers are helping Detroit seniors with snow removal

DETROIT – Neighbors across Metro Detroit are spending time removing snow from their properties. A snowstorm left between two-inches to nearly seven-inches of snow covering some communities.

Clearing properties isn’t easy for all neighbors. That’s why a group of volunteers is stepping up to help neighbors who may need an extra hand.

The City of Detroit Serve Detroit Snow Team is a group of volunteers who are making it a mission to help some of the city’s most vulnerable neighbors during significant snow events. The volunteers commit to helping shovel snow around the walkways and driveways of seniors and disabled residents.

To participate in the effort, volunteers must have their own transportation. Snow removal tools are available from the city’s Department of Neighborhoods, upon request. Salt distribution is the responsibility of the resident.

Volunteers are also asked to be family-friendly and between the ages of 13 and 60.
