In Your Neighborhood: Getting to know Mount Clemens

One of Metro Detroit’s oldest communities

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – About 25 miles north of Detroit is Mount Clemens, the county seat of Macomb County.

The city’s history dates back to just after the Revolutionary War. Christian Clemens settled alongside the Clinton River and built a home where the Macomb County Courthouse now sits.

Indigenous burial mounds were found in the area, just north of the Clinton River, near the current site of Selfridge Air National Guard Base.

For more than 100 years, Mount Clemens was renowned for its tourism industry centered around mineral baths, sourced from natural springs throughout the city.

It was known as the “Bath City of America” for more than seven decades.

Olympia Spa and Salon on Cass Avenue continues this tradition, offering the celebrated mineral baths with a contemporary twist.

The city later gained recognition as the Rose Capital of the United States due to its extensive rose-growing industry.
