One dead after police chase ends in crash

WARREN, Mich. – A police pursuit in Warren ended in tragedy Friday night after a suspect fleeing officers caused a multi-vehicle crash that killed an uninvolved motorist.

According to the Warren Police Department, officers attempted to stop a black Chrysler 300 around 9:33 PM on May 24 near Van Dyke and Miller after seeing it driving recklessly. When officers activated their lights and sirens, the vehicle refused to stop, prompting a pursuit.

The suspect vehicle continued northbound on Van Dyke, then turned southbound before crashing at the intersection of 9 Mile and Van Dyke. The Chrysler struck an uninvolved vehicle, driven by a 71-year-old woman, and then collided with a second car.

The elderly driver was transported to a nearby hospital where she was later pronounced dead from her injuries. The occupants of the secondary vehicle did not suffer serious injuries.

Police say the suspect fled the scene on foot after the crash but was quickly apprehended by officers. He is currently in police custody.

The Warren Police Department’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating the scene. The intersection of 9 Mile and Van Dyke was closed while police investigated.
