Fentanyl overdose investigation uncovers drug operation

ADRIAN, Mich. – A 43-year-old man in Lenawee County is facing multiple felonies after a 34-year-old man died from a fentanyl overdose.

Eric Lee Cooper, of Adrian, was bound over for trial May 23 on multiple firearm and substance charges.

The charges stem from the death of Paul Jones, a 34-year-old man from Blissfield who had a fatal overdose in November 2024.

Police said they tracked the narcotics to an Adrian home, where they found multiple guns, and nearly two pounds of heroin, fentanyl and cocaine.

Cooper was arrested at the scene.

An autopsy reportedly confirmed that Jones died from an overdose of fentanyl delivered by Cooper. He has been charged with several offenses, including:

  • Controlled substance - delivery/manufacture (cocaine, heroin, or another narcotic) less than 50 grams
  • Weapons - firearms - possession by prohibited person
  • Weapons - firearms - ammunition - possession by prohibited person
  • Controlled substances - maintaining a drug house
  • Four counts of weapons felony firearm
  • Delivery of schedule 1 or 2 controlled substance causing death

Cooper is scheduled for a pretrial hearing on July 9.
