Eastpointe man accused of cleaning up house before reporting wife’s death bound for trial

Officials say woman was strangled to death

Steven Frank Kolson Jr. (Macomb County Sheriff's Office)

EASTPOINTE, Mich. – Steven Frank Kolson, 42, of Eastpointe, was bound over for trial on charges of first-degree premeditated murder and tampering with evidence for allegedly killing his wife.

Allegedly, on Saturday, July 27, 2024, Kolson got into an altercation with his wife, 43-year-old April Vitale, that resulted in her death by strangulation.

The preliminary exam for Kolson was held over two days, June 5 and 6, 2025, in the 38th District Court.

Macomb County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Elizabeth Abbo conducted the exam.

Testimony and evidence at the exam revealed allegations of blunt force trauma to Vitale’s face, head, and stomach and manual strangulation.

Upon conclusion of the exam, it was determined there was enough evidence to bind over Kolson on the first-degree premeditated murder and tampering with evidence charges.

He will be arraigned at Macomb County Circuit Court on Monday, June 23, 2025, at 1:30 p.m.

Kolson remains in custody at the Macomb County Jail under a $5 million, no 10% bond.
