Young mom transforms career through CNC training program at Oakland Community College

Next CNC training session begins in September

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Breia Roberts discovered a life-changing career path through Oakland Community College’s CNC training program, landing a position at Williams International after just six weeks of specialized training.

Roberts, an Oxford High School graduate and mother of two, traded her retail job for a career in manufacturing at Williams International, a company specializing in military and commercial turbine engines.

“I can say I did not imagine I would be doing something like this,” Roberts said. “Honestly, because I come from a huge family of entrepreneurs, so I didn’t think this would be like my path.”

The career shift began when Roberts connected with the short-term CNC program through Michigan Works. The training took place at OCC’s CNC lab in Auburn Hills, where students learn to operate Computer Numerical Control machines.

Joe Petrosky, who oversees workforce programs at Oakland Community College, explained the significance of CNC in modern manufacturing.

“CNC machining, Computer Numerically Controlled machining is kind of one of those backbone type things,” said Petrosky. “It’s the people that make things. It’s the backbone of manufacturing, so it’s a good career path.”

Roberts’ ambition extends beyond her current role. When asked about her five-year plan, she expressed interest in advancing her career. “I see myself being an engineer, for sure,” she said.

Beyond professional achievement, Roberts sees her career transformation as a powerful example for her two young daughters.

“It’s been times where I wanted to give up,” Roberts said. “I think I’m teaching them and I’m being that superwoman for them to let them know they can do anything they put their mind to.”

If you’re interested in OCC’s CNC program, the next training session starts in September.
