Police said Craig S. Chinavare, 65, of Carleton, was driving a red 2012 International 4000 flat-bed truck northbound on N. Telegraph Road.

Officials said Chinavare’s truck then came to a complete stop attempting to turn into a private drive in the 13000 block of N. Telegraph Road, located on the west side of the roadway.

While stopped, with brake lights and left turn signal activated, Chinavare’s truck was rear-ended by Benner, Carleton, who was operating a gray 2012 Ford Escape.

After the crash occurred, police said that Benner’s vehicle rotated counterclockwise, leaving the roadway to the east and coming to rest on the shoulder, facing southeast.

Chinavare’s truck came to a controlled stop on the west side of the roadway in a private drive.

Benner was pronounced deceased on the scene. Chinavare was not injured and was released from the scene.

When the crash occurred, officials said Chinavare was wearing his safety belt, but Benner was not.

The airbags in the 2012 Ford Escape were deployed during the crash.

Alcohol and speed are not factors in the crash. Members of the Ash Township Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance, and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Victim Services Unit and Chaplain Program assisted at the scene.
