MONROE COUNTY, Mich. – The deaths of Gwendolyn Fay Smith, 17, a 2025 Bedford Public Schools graduate, and Ryne Jacob Leist, 33, of Temperance, were ruled as homicide and suicide.

The incident occurred Saturday (June 14) at a residence in the 1600 block of West Sterns Road.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office announced on Tuesday, June 17, at 1:30 p.m. that they received communication from the Lucas County Coroner’s Office saying that Smith’s death was ruled a homicide.
The coroner’s office said the cause of death for Leist was ruled a suicide.
Officials said the manner of death for both individuals was gunshot wounds.
There has been information circulating within the community suggesting that Leist was employed as a coach for Bedford Public Schools.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Tuesday that his employment by Bedford Public Schools is not factual.
Officials stated that Leist and Smith were known acquaintances, and there was no evidence to suggest they were in a romantic relationship.
