A fire ignited at the Material Recovery Facility in Ann Arbor on June 18, 2025.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – A facility in Ann Arbor that sorts waste and recycling caught fire Wednesday morning.
The fire happened at the Material Recovery Facility on Platt Road on June 18 at about 8 a.m. According to authorities, the fire originated in the facility’s conveyor belt, complicating efforts to access and extinguish the flames. The conveyor was used to carry the burning trash out of the system, where it was finally extinguished.
The system was not damaged, but a worker was transported to a hospital due to smoke inhalation.
The Ann Arbor Fire Department said that while the facility has experienced fires in the past, Wednesday’s fire marked the first in several years.
The cause of the fire remains unknown and cannot be determined due to the volume of trash involved.
