ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Ann Arbor Fire Department is reminding people to take proper precautions when dealing with the Huron River.
The warning comes after a 911 call reported two kayakers who had gone overboard and were in distress at about 5 p.m., Saturday, June 21. According to authorities, first responders arrived and found four kayakers who were assisted by others to dry land. Due to conflicting information, the Ann Arbor Fire Department continued to check the river, where they found a fifth person who had gone overboard and was hanging onto their kayak near Bandemer Park.

No 911 calls reported the fifth person struggling in the water.
Fire crews said it was lucky that they were double-checking the river, stating, “When river conditions are rough for one, it is often rough for others.”
The next day, the fire department went to Gallup Park on reports of someone who was injured from jumping into the river from the Gallup Bridge. They were recovered with minor injuries and are expected to be OK.
The Ann Arbor Fire Department is urging people not to jump off any bridges into the Huron River, as the depth is constantly changing and the river is filled with debris. Anyone who does anything on the river should wear a personal flotation device, regardless of how confident they are with swimming.
