DETROIT – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed a bipartisan bill to transfer the ownership of the Detroit Detention Center to the city.

The detention center, which is located at 17601 Mound Road, has operated under an interagency agreement between Detroit police and the Michigan Department of Corrections.

According to a release from Whitmer’s office, the city is prepared to fully staff the center, which will free up MDOC staff and resources that can now be used at other sites.

“Today, I am signing another commonsense, bipartisan bill into law that will help save taxpayers money by allowing for the sale of the DDC to the City of Detroit,” said Governor Whitmer. “This sale will also support government efficiency by ensuring resources are put back in local governments. I’ll work with anyone to keep finding ways to make life more affordable for families and make state government more responsive and effective for the people it serves.”

This will save Wayne County taxpayers’ money and help support smoother operations at MDOC, according to the release.

This act will provide the City of Detroit with the ability to fully operate and staff the DDC and frees up MDOC personnel to assist in other areas of the state,” said state Representative Alabas Farhat (D-Dearborn), who sponsored the bill. “It is a win-win situation for all.”
