Construction worker dies after being hit by an excavator in Livingston County road work zone

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, Mich. – A road crew worker was struck and killed by an excavator while working on a job site in Livingston County.

The incident occurred on Monday (June 30) at 3:15 p.m. when Michigan State Police were dispatched to the area of Grand River Avenue near I-96 in Brighton Township.

Livingston County Dispatch reported receiving a call that a road crew worker was struck by an excavator while working on a job site.

Preliminary investigation showed the victim, a 23-year-old man from St. Clair Shores, was working in an excavated hole in the road when the excavator bucket struck him.

Troopers said it appeared that the worker operating the excavator was not aware that the victim was in the hole.

Upon the Trooper’s arrival on the scene, officers from the Brighton City Police Department were already administering medical care to the victim, who had sustained critical injuries.

The victim was transported to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Officials said the incident appeared to be a workplace accident. However, the investigation is ongoing.
