Van on icy road slides into oncoming train in Livingston County

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI – A driver and passenger suffered minor injuries Wednesday after the van they were in was hit by a freight train in Livingston County. Deputies were were called to the crash involving a van and a train at Barron Road just west of Oak Grove Road in in Howell Township on Wednesday, Jan. 25, according to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation showed that, due to the snowy conditions, the van was unable to stop at the stop sign at Barron Road and was struck by a train, police said. Related: Snowstorm remnants: What we can expect Thursday morning and afternoonBoth the driver and passenger of the van were taken to an area hospital to be treated for minor injuries, police said. The Howell Area Fire Department and Livingston County EMS assisted at the scene.

Sheep rescued from partially frozen lake, reunited with owner

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI -- One lucky sheep was saved from a partially frozen lake in Livingston County on Monday. Brighton Area Fire Authority responded to a call around 2 p.m., Jan. 16. about a lost sheep making its way onto Lake Chemung in Genoa Township, located between Brighton and Howell. Officials believe the animal got tired and decided the lake was a good place to rest. With the help of passersby, fire officials were able to reunite the sheep with its owner that same day. Furlong estimates the sheep wandered around two to three miles from where its owner lives.

Officers arrived to discover five suspects stealing items from the store in an apparent organized raid, police said. Police fired shots at the suspect’s vehicle, but there were no reported injuries. The Green Oak Township Police Department and the Michigan State Police are investigating the incident. The Green Oak Township Fire Department, Michigan State Police, Livingston County Ambulance, Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, Livingston County Central Dispatch, Hamburg Township Police Department, Brighton Police Department and Metro Parks Police Authority assisted at the scene.

Home security cameras aid in arrest of home invasion suspect

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI – A home invasion suspect was arrested after two homeowners with security cameras spotted the man breaking into their homes while they were away and called police. The homeowners, who were not home at the time, reported they were alerted by their home security cameras that someone was inside the home, police said. They checked their security cameras and saw an unknown man had entered the home through an unlocked door, police said, adding they used the camera’s live feed to yell at the man, causing him to flee the home, police said. Fifteen minutes after the reported home invasion, officers received another report of a home invasion in progress on Longford Court, where out-of-town homeowners reported seeing an intruder in their home on their security cameras, police said. The man was taken to the Livingston County Jail to await charges for breaking and entering, attempted vehicle theft and operating while intoxicated.

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI -- In mid-January 2018, a meteor lit up the sky in Michigan as it exploded, dropping pieces called meteorites in Livingston County’s Hamburg Township, just north of Ann Arbor. Now, you can see what he found during an upcoming event hosted by the Hamburg Township Historical Society. Admission is $5 per person for those who are not members of the historical society and free for those who are. But, it soon seemed to be the best spot to find the meteorites was around Hamburg Township’s Chain of Lakes. At the historical society event, Licata plans to show some of the meteorites he found, including the first one he discovered that was 16 grams.

Shooting threat from student closes Brighton-area school

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI - A shooting threat from a student has shut down a Brighton-area school. The student sent the threat at 3:08 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, in a text message to another student at Livingston Christian School in Genoa Township, just west of Brighton, according to Michigan State Police. The message sent by the suspected student, a 16-year-old, was, “Tomorrow I’m going to bring a gun to school and kill you, don’t come to school tomorrow,” police said. Upon investigation, the suspected student admitted to sending the threat, police said, though investigators determined the student did not have access to firearms to carry out the threat. The MSP investigation will be forwarded to the Livingston County Prosecutor’s Office to review potential charges.

U.S. 23 lane closures coming for resurfacing project

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI - A section of U.S. 23 between Ann Arbor and Flint will be reduced to one lane for much of December for a resurfacing project. One lane of the highway will close in the northbound direction daily between Crouse Road and Clyde Road in Livingston County, beginning Thursday, Dec. 8, and running through Thursday Dec. 22, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation. The two-week lane closure will be in effect daily from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m., officials said. The project in Hartland Township will improve ride quality and extend the service life of the roadway, a major commuter route, according to MDOT. LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI -- Two Massachusetts men will be standing trial in Livingston County for their role in a deadly 2012 fungal meningitis outbreak that killed 11 Michigan residents, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced on Friday. Barry Cadden, 56, and Glenn Chin, 54, will stand trial in the Livingston County Circuit Court, each on 11 counts of second-degree murder. Of the 64 deaths across the country, 11 occurred at the Michigan Pain Specialists Clinic in Livingston County. Although Livingston County District Judge Shauna Murphy ruled in 2020 that there was enough evidence to bring the men to trial, both sought an itemization of claims brought by the state. Both motions were denied by Livingston County Circuit Court Judge Michael Hatty.

Officials set to preview 3-year, $146-million expansion of U.S. 23 Flex Route to I-96

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI - Michigan’s first Flex Route, a system of electronically controlled shoulder lanes meant to ease congestion and boost safety on U.S. 23 north of Ann Arbor, is about to get longer. The $146-million project in Livingston County is set to get underway in the spring of 2023, and residents have the chance to examine the plans at a public meeting focused on what they’re calling “phase 2″ of the U.S. 23 Flex Route project. Man steals golf cart, goes on joy ride before breaking into home, sheriff says

GENESEE COUNTY, MI – A 39-year-old Davison man is lodged in the Genesee County Jail after allegedly stealing a golf cart and driving it to a nearby road before breaking into the house, authorities said. Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson said during a news conference Wednesday, Oct. 5, that Aaron Matthew Braham was arrested after breaking into a home in the 1200 block of Margaret Drive on Saturday, Oct. 1. Swanson said Braham approached four people golfing at the Fenton Farms Golf Course off Torrey Road. in Fenton, and told them he was going to take their golf cart. He was able to enter one home through a sunroom, Swanson said, before being arrested by Genesee County Sheriff’s deputies.

Woman killed in crash on I-96 in Livingston County

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI – A woman was killed Sunday night in a two-vehicle crash on I-96 in Livingston County. Melissa Fletcher, 54, of Detroit, died Sunday, Sept. 11, after suffering fatal injuries in a two-vehicle crash on eastbound I-96 near Grand River Avenue in Brighton Township, according to the Michigan State Police. Rescue crews were called to the area at 9:17 p.m. where they discovered Fletcher and another vehicle had collided. The driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries in the crash and was taken to an area hospital for treatment, police said. It is unclear what lead up to the crash which is still under investigation.

Jermain Martinez, 42, was arraigned on one felony count of accosting a minor for immoral purposes, Aug. 2, court records show. Martinez, owner of iTumble, 11019 Hi Tech Drive, Whitmore Lake, was charged after a former gym employee and athlete of the establishment, now 17, made a complaint about Martinez, records show. Accosting a minor for immoral purposes is punishable by up to four years in prison. Overturned gravel hauler closes ramp on U.S. 23 to I-96

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI – The U.S. 23 exit ramp to I-96 in Livingston County is shut down after a gravel hauler overturned on the side of the roadway. Police were called at about 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, to the northbound U.S. 23 ramp to westbound I-96 for the overturned gravel hauler that is currently blocking the ramp, according to Michigan State Police. The driver of the gravel hauler suffered minor injuries in the crash and no other vehicles were involved, police said. Only the exit ramp is closed and traffic on U.S. 23 and I-96 are unaffected, police said. Police were called at about 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2022, to the northbound U.S. 23 ramp to westbound I-96 for the overturned gravel hauler that is currently blocking the ramp, according to the Michigan State Police.

Michigan State Police trooper on way to emergency call hit by suspected drunken driver

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI – A suspected drunken driver was arrested Tuesday evening after crashing into a Michigan State Police patrol car on its way to an emergency call. Paramedics were called to the scene and medically cleared both the trooper and the driver of the other vehicle after finding no injuries, police said. The driver of the northbound vehicle, a 68-year-old man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, police said. He was taken to the Livingston County Jail to await pending charges, police said. Proposed pathway would link 15K+ acres of parks, recreation areas

Driver caught going 105 mph on I-96 will pay $220 for speeding

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI – Police watching for motorists going too fast to be safe on I-96 caught a doozy of a speeder Tuesday morning. At 9:20 a.m. July 5, a Michigan State Police trooper on I-96 near M-59 in Howell Township recorded and pulled over a motorist going 105 mph on the freeway, well over the posted speed limit of 70 mph, police said. The driver, a 20-year-old man, was issued a speeding ticket and sent on his way before being told to slow down, police said. Fines vary from county to county, though in Livingston County the fine is listed at $220, police said. Police remined drivers that speed kills and asks all motorists to drive the posted speed limits for the safety of all drivers.

Expect delays on U.S. 23 as nightly closures for construction begin

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI - Road work along a well-traveled highway between Ann Arbor and Flint will limit nighttime travel in one direction this summer. A roughly seven-mile stretch of U.S. 23 southbound from M-59 to Spencer Road will close each night between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. beginning on Thursday, June 30, and ending on Monday morning, July 25, MDOT officials said. Traffic is being detoured via M-59, Old U.S. 23, Spencer Road and I-96, and drivers should expect delays. The closures are part of a multi-stage resurfacing, safety and drainage improvement project on M-59. During the project, which began this year, officials have temporarily closed M-59 ramps and limited traffic on M-59.

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI – A small airplane made an emergency landing Saturday afternoon, coming to rest on a stretch of highway near Brighton. No one was injured in the incident, Michigan State Police said in a statement. The plane’s landing immediately caused a traffic backup on U.S. 23, north of Ann Arbor, according to Green Oak Township police. The plane was quickly removed from the roadway, and has since been towed to a Michigan Department of Transportation garage, Michigan State Police said. MSP troopers were on the scene to assist the Green Oak Township Police Department.

U.S. 23 north of Brighton shutting down nightly for construction project

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI – Motorists using U.S. 23 north of Brighton will find it unusable after dark starting Friday for the next month. U.S. 23 near Brighton between Spencer Road and Clyde Road will be shut down nightly starting Friday, June 3, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. as the Michigan Department of Transportation continues its $27 million resurfacing project for the freeway. Resurfacing on this section of U.S. 23 is expected to be completed by June 24 with the entirety of the MDOT project wrapping up by Nov. 4, officials said. During the shutdown, motorist are advised to seek alternative routes, but traffic will be detoured by way of I-96, Spencer Road, Old U.S. 23 and M-59. MDOT noted the improvements will provide increased safety and mobility in this area of U.S. 23, which is a significant local and national trade corridor.

Police seize $40K of meth in Livingston County bust

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI -- A traffic stop in Livingston County uncovered a potential drug trafficking operation, police said. At about 11:30 a.m May 17, troopers from the Michigan State Police Third District Hometown Security Team conducted a traffic stop on a Georgia-plated Ford Fusion driving north on U.S.-23 near Clyde Road in Hartland Township, eastern Livingston County, police said. During a search of the vehicle, troopers found about 20 pounds of crystal methamphetamine, valued at about $40,000, police said. Drug trafficking charges for both men are pending, police said. Genesee County clerk’s criminal case headed to Livingston County

GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- The criminal case against Clerk-Register John Gleason is headed to Livingston County after district court judges here disqualified themselves from hearing the case. The State Court Administrator’s Office made the assignment in an order issued Thursday, May 12, sending the case to Livingston County District Judge Daniel B. Bain’s courtroom. The charges were filed after the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office investigated allegations that Gleason pressured county employees to backdate a marriage affidavit and license for the wedding. Prior to taking the bench, he was in private practice with the firm of Bain and Bain for 25 years, according to the Livingston County District Court website. He stood mute on the criminal charges when he was arraigned in Genesee County.

Pinckney High School senior injured in head-on crash days after prom

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI – A Pinckney High School senior is currently in stable condition after surviving a head-on crash with a pickup on M-36 in Hamburg Township Monday morning. Rescue crews were called at 9 a.m. Monday, May 2, to M-36 east of Merrill Road for a reported head-on crash with injuries, according to the Hamburg Township Public Safety Administration. Trial date in Brighton PFAS cleanup case pushed into December

HOWELL, MI — Litigation between the state of Michigan and the former owner of a Brighton factory contaminated with toxic PFAS chemicals will be tried this winter. LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI - Avian flu has been discovered in a non-commercial backyard poultry flock in Livingston County, state officials said. An investigation by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and testing by the Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory confirmed the infection. The bird flu is considered high risk for poultry, and this alert on Friday, April 15, announced that the premises where the infected flock lives is under quarantine. Construction foreman dies in fall from three-story project in Livingston County

PINCKNEY, MI – A construction foreman died Monday when he fell from the third floor of a residential building still under construction in Livingston County. MIOSHA officials stated the fatality is still under investigation and declined to release the name of the man or the place of business. There were 40 reported workplace fatalities in Michigan investigated by MIOSHA in 2021 and 74 investigated in 2020. Several of the deaths investigated involved workers dying of COVID complications, according to MIOSHA records. The state saw its lowest number of workplace related deaths in 2009 with 24 total deaths investigated.

Rep. Jewell Jones won’t face more jail, sentenced to two-year probation

Livingston County Judge Michael Hatty told Jones he had served enough jail time after being held in a Livingston County jail for two months fall, the lawmaker’s attorney, Bryon Nolen, said Thursday. Jones was sentenced to serve two-years of probation under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act and is required to perform 100 hours of community service. Jones was sentenced to 61 days in jail, but was credited with 61 days already served. Jewell Jones (D-Inkster) to two years’ probation for an April drunk driving incident that led to a physical altercation with police on I-96 in Livingston County. Livingston County Circuit Judge Michael Hatty credited on the sentence the 61 days Jones served last fall as well as 100 hours of community service. A Black Michigan State Police trooper who tussled with Jones had requested to the court that he serve more jail time for the incident. On Sept. 14, Jones was charged with two felonies after prosecutors alleged that he brought a handcuff key into the Livingston County jail following his hearing for his third bond violation. On Thursday, Richards said that unless Jones has a significant revelation, she does not believe he will be successful in completing his probation.

Two Howell High School students killed in crash near Brighton

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI – Two Howell High School students were killed in a crash Saturday night in Genoa Township, police say. Emergency crews were called at about 10:50 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, to the area of S. Hacker Road and McClements Road north of Brighton for a report of a two-vehicle crash, according to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office. Michigan reported 33,551 new coronavirus cases, about 16,776 a day, and 210 deaths on Thursday, Jan. 20, and Friday, Jan. 21. The cases include new referrals of confirmed cases to the Michigan Disease Surveillance System since the last update on Wednesday, Jan. 19. There have now been 1,866,267 confirmed cases and 29,190 confirmed deaths since the start of the pandemic. Following were: Marquette County (542), Delta County (528), Bay County (523), Iron County (516), Saginaw County (461), Shiawassee County (452), Keweenaw County (440), Houghton County (439) and Mackinac County (434). Trooper investigating crash on icy roadway injured when car crashes into patrol vehicle

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI – A Michigan State Police trooper was injured Saturday night when he was rear-ended by another vehicle sliding out of control on U.S. 23, police said. At 10: 36 p.m. Jan. 8, the trooper was investigating a crash on northbound U.S. 23 near Spencer Road, east of Brighton, when a northbound vehicle lost control and crashed into the back of the trooper’s patrol SUV, according to Michigan State Police. The trooper suffered minor injuries in the crash and was taken to an area hospital where he was later released, police said. The driver of the other vehicle was uninjured and the sole occupant of the vehicle, police said. Michigan State Police remind all motorists to be aware of emergency vehicles on the roads and slow down during adverse weather.
