The speed limit on the bridge has been lowered from 35 mph to 25 mph to support the durability of the bridge.
“The recent repairs and speed limit restrictions are essential to maintaining the long-term integrity of the structure,” according to a release from the Wayne County Department of Public Services.
Speed humps and speed feedback signs will also be installed along the roadways that lead to the bridge to lower the speed of vehicles as they approach.
The bridge was first closed for repairs on May 1, but was temporarily reopened on Thursday, May 22, to provide traffic relief during Memorial Day weekend and Grosse Ile Islandfest.
The second phase of the structural steel work began on Monday, June 23, and the closure was initially expected to last for two weeks.
