‘Quit running, quit hiding’: Family seeking justice after woman shot, killed on Detroit’s east side

Woman shot, killed in May

DETROIT – A woman’s family is asking her killer to take accountability after they were still left without answers or closure when she was murdered in May.

Karmen Wells arranged a date with the suspect for 11 a.m. on May 25, 2025.

The suspect went to her home on Troester Street, where they shot and killed Wells in her bedroom. They then ransacked her fanny pack and took her phone before leaving the scene.

Wells’ family appeared in a press conference on Wednesday, asking for the suspect to come forward and take accountability.

Markeitha Bibb, Wells’ aunt, said she meant a great deal to her family and the LGBTQIA+ community.

“Quit running, quit hiding,” said Bibb. “Karmen was a wonderful person. She was well loved, and she loved everybody.”

De’Andris Simpkins said Wells was his mother in the LGBTQIA+ community and helped him overcome his shyness.

“I’m going to miss her laugh and her smile,” said Simpkins. “I’m going to miss how she would eat people up in runways.”

“The person that did this to our mother, to our beautiful Karmen, you are going to get what is coming for you, whatever that may be,” continued Simpkins. “We have to live our life knowing that Karmen was taken from us.”

“All I want is justice for my child,” said Monica Wells, the woman’s mother. “I will not speak my child in past tense because my child is here, and she’s standing here with me right now because if she weren’t, I wouldn’t be able to stand here and do this.”

“You’re a coward, and I hope you rot in hell for what you done,” Monica said as a message to her child’s murderer.

Crime Stoppers announced a cash reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to an arrest for the murder of Wells.

Anyone with information is urged to call 1-800-SPEAK UP. You will remain anonymous. Crime Stoppers said rewards are paid when tips lead to an arrest. They do not wait for a conviction.
