‘Poverty has no zip code’: Ex-NBA stars support over 300 in need at Detroit’s Cass Park

Derrick Coleman, Tarence Wheeler, Mike Jones, and Tim Hardaway, Sr., put it all together

DETROIT – Some former NBA players spent time in Detroit’s Cass Park, intending to feed over 300 veterans and homeless families.

Derrick Coleman, Tarence Wheeler, and Mike Jones put it all together on Friday (July 4).

The father of former Michigan Wolverines star Tim Hardaway, Sr., also donated clothes to be passed out to those in need.

Organizers said they came in with the mindset of “Less judgment, more help.”

“The need is great and we know that poverty has no zip code as people from all walks of life need help,” said Wheeler. “At any day, it could be any of us. The face of poverty is no longer the bum on the street; it’s the working poor. Those who make too much money to get help and not enough to survive. ”

The event was made possible by the efforts of dozens of volunteers. Organizers expect to return again next year.
