2 in custody after toddler shot in Detroit

Toddler struck by stray bullet, police say

DETROIT – A 2-year-old child was struck by a stray bullet over the holiday weekend in Detroit.

Police said the child was rushed to a hospital and is expected to be OK. Two people were taken into custody.

The shooting happened on Marion Street, which is near Van Dyke Avenue and Harper Street on Detroit’s east side. The family was in the street enjoying fireworks Saturday night just before midnight when a stray bullet fired from a park a block away struck the child.

Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said the child is in temporary serious condition, but is expected to survive.

Police said a group of young people were at a nearby park when someone opened fire during an argument. Bettison said they detained two young people as persons of interest in the shooting.
